Join 400 Gymnastics Coaches On June 2nd At GymCon 2019 in Birmingham, UK, discover one of the most important but overlooked aspects of gymnastics coaching, and use it to rapidly improve your results…
Gymnastics coach? Good, you’re in the right place.
You see, on this page I outline exactly why GymCon 2019 is going to be the biggest and best gymnastics coach education event EVER put on in Europe.
A bold claim, sure, but it’s one I can back up.
You see, the opportunity detailed on this page could well be the difference between you achieving your life long coaching goals or just continuing on the same path that you’re already on.
But first things first, who am I?
I’m Nick Ruddock, and I’ve been in gymnastics my whole life (well, since the age of 5).
First, I was a gymnast (although not a great one!), then a personal coach, then a national coach for GBR Gymnastics, coaching Amy Tinkler and others during their formative years and contributing towards medals and Olympic, World and European Level.
And now, I’m a consultant and gymnastics educator, travelling the world, working with international federations on their whole set-up, from the makeup of the coaching team through to the specific drills their athletes need to be doing.
I work with a fast-growing group of switched-on coaches as part of my Inner Circle group, helping them to get the very best out of their athletes in their care.
When I’m not working with my various clients from around the world and my Inner Circle members, I devote A LOT of time to developing content that’ll help the wider gymnastics community.
I host the Gymnastics Growth Show – a podcast for coaches, and run the Gymnastics Growth Club Facebook group: both designed to help coaches to reach their highest possible potential.
Quite simply, because I know the importance of education, and I truly value it.
I know that it plays a critical role in our destiny as coaches.
If it wasn’t for my mentors - Al and Armine Fong, Valeri Liukin and Carol Angela Orchard - to name a few, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
And I believe it’s my duty to give other coaches the same opportunities I was given.
On an average day, you could find me overseas coaching or consulting for any number of international gymnastics federations and clubs, including the German, Dutch, Japanese or Brazilian gymnastics teams.
It’s a topic that can literally transform the results of an entire country, let alone club or coach.
Over the many years I’ve been involved in gymnastics, I’ve come to realise that your organisation can have fantastic, naturally talented athletes, fantastic facilities and great drills, but that without this ‘special sauce’, you’ll never truly reach your potential.
"I have nothing but positive things to say about the whole event, the speakers were all outstanding and the way each part was presented was amazing."
Ever heard of Sun Tzu? Most people haven’t.
Sun Tzu was a Chinese general and military strategist who lived around 2,500 years ago, and one of his most famous quotes is this one:
“Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat”
It’s a simple quote, but it’s so profound.
An organisation that operates without a strategy is just like a plastic bag in a Katy Perry song – tossed to and fro, chopping, changing and never getting to where they want to be (mainly because they don’t know).
Speak with any great leader, coach or organisation, and they’ll have a fine-tuned strategy in place to ensure they reach their specific targets.
They won’t attempt to reach their targets with “tactics” alone – jumping from thing to thing, and changing things up as soon as they appear not to be working.
You see, when you know where you’re going, it’s much easier to understand how you’re going to get there.
Just so we’re absolutely clear, strategy is not just a fancy word from tactics, so if you’re not sure exactly what I mean by strategy, then allow me to explain:
Your club might have an objective to be the best club in your region.
You’ll formulate a strategy for how – over time – you’re going to become the best club in the region.
The strategy will then dictate the tactics you’ll use in order to carry out your strategy.
There are three main reasons why:
1. Coaching is a time consuming task and leaves little time for reflection and strategic planning.
Let’s face it, there is a ton of ‘hands on’ work to be done in the gym, and the last thing most coaches fancy doing after a 40 hour week near the chalk bucket is forging a strategy around a meeting table.
2. Most people confuse ‘strategy' with ‘tactics’ and they are NOT the same thing.
Consider strategy the 'recipe', and tactics the ‘ingredients.’ You can have the finest resources in the world at your disposal, but if you can’t put them to work effectively, they aren’t much good!
3. Strategy can be intimidating.
It’s unknown territory, possibly full of jargon, and whilst we may see the value in the concept, we much prefer to stay in our comfort zones and focus on what we already know best. Or at least, what we think is best.
"The speakers were absolutely amazing and so inspirational! I’m really glad I came to the event! "
For a start, strategy SAVES time. Acres of it in fact. And when you prioritise it, you give your club far more chance of doing the right stuff.
You see, when you know what your goals are, it becomes much easier to know what activity needs to happen in order to achieve those goals.
Rather than spending ALL your time in the gym, grafting and sweating without making any progress, you start with a small amount of time on strategy.
Because once you’ve nailed your strategy, your activity is designed specifically to make progress.
Secondly, strategy does not have to be dull, boring or tedious.
Actually, it’s the opposite. You see, it’s not all notebooks and whiteboards – good strategy actually brings people together, and invites collaboration and teamwork.
How do you identify the correct goals and understand the most effective way of achieving them?
How do you distill that strategy down into an understandable format that your entire team can work off and get bought into?
These are not easy questions to answer. And for most coaches, they’re sufficiently difficult enough questions that they never get answered.
There’s always a training session to run, more drills to do, or competitions to prepare for.
Strategy never gets to the top of the ‘to-do’ list, and even if it does, no one knows where to start, so it doesn’t happen.
And that’s why you’re reading this.
At this year’s GymCon, together with a star-studded lineup of some of the biggest names in the world of Gymnastics, we’ll be diving deep into the topic of strategy, giving you:
If you’ve never been to GymCon before, I’ll forgive you for not knowing what to expect, so let me first put your mind at ease.
These events are open to all coaches, from any nation, of any level, of any discipline and even any sport.
You don’t need to be registered to a specific governing body or be a member of a certain organisation to attend.
In fact GymCon has been attended by coaches in dozens of countries from all corners of the world, and attracts coaches from a wide range of sports due to the accessible and easy to implement knowledge shared on the day (not to mention devilishly effective!)
"An influential and enriching opportunity for personal development. The range of speakers and the content delivered is inspiring and well organised."
Having consulted and advised on this very topic to multiple international teams you’ll see on the world stage, I know a thing or two about strategy, but when you come to GymCon, you won’t be hearing from just me.
Far from it.
With the likes of Scott Hann MBE, Dr Dave Tilley and Valorie Kondos Field stepping up on stage in previous years, the bar is set rather high, but I’m confident I’ve got it well covered.
Each year, I guarantee the audience the very best speakers and experts to help me deliver a compelling and transformational conference which has the power to seismically impact your results.
GymCon 2019 is no exception, and I’ve secured some of the hottest names in gymnastics, with the world class medals to match.
Put simply, if you can’t learn from these coaches, you’ve got little chance of learning at all.
So here are the names which have been announced so far:
As usual, I’ll be kicking off the event with a presentation on the event theme; strategy, sharing with you the most critical considerations and actions to implement, based on my experience consulting for nearly 20 national teams, and thousands of clubs around the world. I’ll then be passing over the mic to some of the greatest gymnastics coaches in the world ...
Aimee Boorman needs little introduction to the artistic gymnastics community, having coached the greatest women’s artistic gymnast of all time, Simone Biles to multiple World and Olympic titles, and as Head Coach of the USA Woman’s Olympic Gymnastics Team in Rio 2016. Aimee is now the executive Director of Evo Athletics in Florida, and will be answering questions from myself and the audience in a live question and answer session at GymCon 2019 on the topic of strategy and much more!
Gerben is the Head National Coach of the WAG Dutch National Team. Gerben has extensive expertise as both a personal and national coach at international level, and has lead the Dutch team of athletes and coaches to a signifiant rise in performance in recent years, culminating in medals at World, European and Olympic level. Gerben is a great addition to our GymCon 2019 speaker lineup and and can add both the theory as well as practice (and results to match!) on our event theme of strategy!
Kate Richardson-Walsh, is the most capped female hockey player in her country’s history, and was captain of GB and England women’s hockey teams for 13 years.
After securing a bronze in London 2012, Rio 2016 was her fourth Games and finally yielded the coveted Olympic Gold medal. An inspirational and charismatic leader she has been widely credited for helping build the incredible team ethos and commitment that drove the GB team to a nail biting victory against Holland in the final.
I’m absolutely positive that the experts on stage at GymCon 2019 will provide you with a huge amount of value, but the sessions and speakers aren’t the only benefit to attending GymCon 2019.
World class speakers delivering world class content

Who doesn't like freebies?
Plus teas, coffees and refreshments
Hundreds of likeminded coaches in attendance
Unrivalled learning opportunities
"The speakers were so inspiring and motivational, it’s given me such a thirst for continuing to better my coaching! "
With all of this laid out in front of you, it’d be natural for you to assume that this event will cost many hundreds of pounds to attend.
After all, it’s in a luxury venue, parking is free, lunch is included and you’ll be rubbing shoulders with some of the hottest names in the world of gymnastics, as well as learning from their in-depth and practical stage sessions.
But if you were thinking that you’d have to sell your car to get a ticket to GymCon, think again.
Once again, I’ve made GymCon tickets as affordable as I possibly can, which means that a standard ticket is priced at just £199.
When you consider that a day with me would cost you over £1000, and you’re getting me, a whole host of other experts PLUS the experience of spending quality time with coaches who know what it’s like to be in your shoes, £199 looks like exceptional value.

"It was an amazing experience and an event every coach should attend to expand their knowledge."
If you’ve been to one of my events before, then I hope you’ll have enough trust that this event will be worth your time that you’ve already pencilled it into your diary.
As you know, all of my conferences sell out, and that’s because I really do pack them with as much value as I possibly can.
But if you HAVEN’T been to one of our events before, then I guess you might still be mulling things over.
"It was my first gymnastics conference and my expectations were exceeded."
GymCon is on a Sunday, to give as many people as possible a chance to attend.
I’ve been in the gymnastics space for a long time now, and I know better than most how difficult it is for gymnastics coaches to find time for themselves AND time for education.
That’s why this event is on a Sunday – to give you the best chance of getting there.
And if Sunday is a typical training day for you, I really do encourage you to plan ahead and find an alternative session for your athletes on that day – I’m confident that the lack of coaching for them on that one day will be massively outweighed by the immense value and insights that you return to the gym with.
GymCon is for all gymnastics coaches, no matter their level.
If you’re thinking that this event is only for the cream of coaching, you’d be wrong.
Whilst our events do attract some of the gymnastic world’s highest level coaches from all over the globe, we have just as many volunteers, part time coaches and those just starting out at the bottom of the ladder.
And if you’re concerned that you’ll rock up and have to listen to a load of confusing jargon, think again – we use easy-to-understand words that get the message across, which means there’s need to have a degree in gymnastics or biomechanics just to understand what’s being said.
In fact, there’s no need to have any qualifications or experience at all. All you need is you, and an open mind.
GymCon 2019 will see me sharing the stage with some of the smartest Gymnastics minds out there.
As always, I won’t just be relying on my own expertise in these areas, I’m flying in industry experts, people who can give you exactly what you need to get the most out of your athletes.
And I’m incredibly excited about them.
These are the same calibre of speakers that have regularly attracted an international audience to my events, with coaches from as far as Australia attending.
Coaches that recognise the importance of investing in their personal development, for the benefit of themselves and of course their athletes.
And these are the coaches that are looking for an edge over the competition.
GymCon is in the most central location possible.
I’m holding GymCon 2019 at the the National Conference Centre in Birmingham, just metres off the M42, a stone’s throw from Birmingham International and slap bang in the middle of the country, just two hours from Manchester, Cardiff or London, under three hours from Southampton and under four from Newcastle.
So, if you’re thinking that you don’t want to drive, just remember that for the sake of a few hours in the car listening to a podcast or some of your favourite tunes, you can access cutting edge gymnastics content not being taught anywhere else in the country.
And in any case, we’ve had attendees from Australia, Finland and France to our previous events – as the saying goes ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way’!
National Conference Centre, Coventry Rd, Solihull B92 0EJ, UK
< 1 minute from M42 Motorway
Just 1.4 Miles from Birmingham International Railway Station
Just 1.6 Miles from Birmingham International Airport
The information will be applicable for multiple disciplines
The beauty of the content I’ve chosen for this year’s conference is that it’s applicable for multiple disciplines; not just women's artistic gymnastics. In fact, I’ll be making sure that if you’re a coach of any sport, you’ll get significant value from the day.
Nowhere else will you be able to spend time in close quarters with other ambitious Gymnastics coaches
My events are fast becoming the ‘go to’ places for Gymnastics coaches who care about personal development to congregate, share ideas and spent time together.
The part of you that doesn’t want to sacrifice your Sunday might be thinking that you can just catch up afterwards, but the reality is that even if I record the event and make those recordings available, it’ll be at a dearer price than your ticket, and there really is no substitute to being there live, rubbing shoulders with your peers and forging new connections.
Nowhere else will you be able to sample cutting-edge products and speak to key gymnastics manufacturers about the kit you need for your club (and get great offers on the things you need)
Like last year, I’ve handpicked a number of exhibitors to attend GymCon. I’ve had a lot of requests from coaches who desire opportunity to speak to manufacturers and sample products, and that’s why GymCon will provide an opportunity to do exactly that. Most manufacturers will have event offers too, allowing you to access kit at prices you won’t find anywhere else.
This event will come and go. Hundreds of coaches will attend. Many of whom will make seismic leaps in their coach development.
You should be one of those coaches.
Call me biased, but I can’t see why a gymnastics coach wouldn’t want to attend.
I’ve spent tens of thousands of pounds travelling all over the world to learn from coaches just like those stepping on stage at GymCon 2019, but I’ve taken out the donkey work and I’m bringing them into one room for you to learn from, for less than a couple of Starbucks a week.
So, I urge you: make it happen.
Thanks for reading, I look forward to seeing you at GymCon on June 2nd along with your colleagues and peers, absorbing the atmosphere, information and forging new strategies to impact your coaching and athletes’ results for a lifetime.
